Dr Alison Wood is a Senior Lecturer and the Programme Lead on the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing for Health Care Professionals course.

Alison qualified as an Adult Nurse from the University of Edinburgh in 2007. Her nursing career began within general and renal medicine areas. Most recently focusing within haemodialysis in NHS Lothian whilst completing her MSc and PhD.
Currently, Alison holds an Honorary Nurse Consultant position within NHS Lothian in Non-medical Prescribing. This is part of QMU and NHS Lothian’s Clinical and Academic Homes scheme. This partnership has facilitated the development of research, education and wider governance developments in this area.
Alison held a Principal's Career Development Studentship as part of her PhD studies which allowed her to support pre-registration and postgraduate nursing students on a variety of modules including skills and research methods. Alison then moved into Higher Education full time in 2017 and became a Senior Fellow of the HEA in 2022. She has extensive experience in teaching and learning activities as Postdoctoral Fellow/Lecturer/Programme Leader in Nursing in previous and current academic posts (University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University). She is involved in the supervision of postgraduate students and PhD students.
In 2020/21, she supported the Development of National online resource for Prescribing Programmes and for Practice Assessor/ Practice Supervisor with NHS Education for Scotland and continues to work within haemodialysis and renal areas as a registered nurse providing patient care, developing research ideas and links within this clinical area and patient population.
Alison has been a peer-reviewer for various journals and research grants. Alison's teaching roles have been within both undergraduate and postgraduate, most recently holding programme leader for prescribing and advanced clinical practice programmes. Alison is an External Examiner at Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Aberdeen and the University of Wolverhampton and holds a position as a Nursing and Midwifery Council Quality Assurance Visitor. She also acted as external expert for Prescribing programme approval events.
Alison's PhD (2012-2017) focused on the shared experiences of nursing care within the haemodialysis clinical area using an insider ethnographic approach. Subsequently, she obtained a grant from the Physiological Society to produce a set of learning outcomes for pre-registration nurses on physiology and supported work exploring the development of an anatomy syllabus.Â
Alison is open to PhD supervision enquires. She is currently supervising various PhD projects ; advanced practice education, nurses experiences in patient care, community nursing and homelessness care.
Alison is an associate member of the Centre for Person-Centred Practice Research at 17³Ô¹ÏÍø.

Alison is the programme leader for the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing Programme. This is an NMC and HCPC regulated programme. She is also the Module Leader across QMU's Prescribing modules.
