Lindsay Smith is a Lecturer in Radiography in the Division of Dietetics, Nutrition and Biological Sciences, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Radiography at Queen Margaret University.

I studied at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in 2009 with a BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy and Oncology. Following qualification, I took up a Band 5 radiographer post at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, where I gained broad clinical experience working across both pre-treatment and treatment units.
In 2011, I moved to the North Staffordshire Cancer Centre, taking on a senior radiographer role. During this time, I was able to pursue my growing interest in radiotherapy planning by joining the dosimetry team, which also marked the beginning of my postgraduate studies in Radiotherapy Planning and Dosimetry at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2014, I returned to the North of England after securing a Team Lead position at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. My continued postgraduate study and developing expertise in dosimetry supported my progression into the role of Clinical Specialist in Image Guidance and Technical Development.
As a Clinical Specialist, my role combined the implementation of new treatment delivery equipment and protocols with responsibility for training staff in image-guided radiotherapy. It was through this work that I recognised my enjoyment of teaching, mentoring, and supporting others’ professional development. In 2019, I stepped away from clinical practice to work in the commercial sector, training university lecturers internationally on a virtual reality radiotherapy system and supporting its integration into academic curricula. This role also provided valuable insight into the start-up and SME environment, alongside exposure to academic practice across different cultures.
In 2023, I completed an MSc in Enhanced Radiotherapy and Oncology and, following a period of extensive travel and time away from home, decided to return to higher education. My career to date has provided me with a strong and varied skill set, bringing together a passion for radiotherapy technologies and dosimetry with a commitment to teaching, mentoring, and academic development.

Throughout the majority of my postgraduate education, my research focus centred on radiotherapy technologies and dose planning. However, following my experiences in the commercial sector and my involvement in the development and delivery of simulation-based education within radiotherapy programmes across international university curricula, my research interests evolved. This shift led to a growing focus on simulation-based education within the healthcare setting, which formed the basis of my MSc thesis research.
